An illustrated talk and practical demonstration by well-known and highly respected naturalist Karin Spottiswoode promises to be a highlight of the Modderfontein Conservation Society’s (MCS) annual programme on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Karin will tell all about Kloofendal Nature Reserve – a natural gem in the West Rand – and how the Reserve effectively uses its resources to promote environmental education. Her talk: “Hands-on Environmental Education” is particularly relevant to Modderfontein where environmental education is a focal point in MCS planning. It will also be of interest to anyone home schooling their children. Her talk starts at 7.30pm at the Modderfontein Town Hall in Casino Road.
Although a qualified occupational therapist it was Karin’s hobby of studying South Africa’s natural wonders that led her to qualify as a field guide. What followed was a passion for sharing her knowledge and experience of our natural heritage. Her work in the Botanical Society and at Kloofendal is the stuff of legend.
Over the past 15 years she has organised guided nature walks in the Kloofendal Nature Reserve most weekends of the year. She initiated a “hands-on” environmental educational programme for schools in the reserve using qualified field guides and has assisted Bushveld Training Adventures with their part time field guide training course, also in the reserve.
Visitors are welcome to attend.
An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
