Running is her cardio
We caught up with this bubbly legal administrator who confessed she often leaves things until the last minute (sounds familiar!) and runs for the hills at the mere sight of a spider.
I used to do short distances and hurdles in school, and I loved it. Trail runs soon followed and then I entered a warrior race … I suffered immensely because my running was really substandard. Now, I’m not the type to give up that easily and decided to join the Greenstone Hill Running Club to improve my running efficiency. What a great decision … it is very social (to my liking!) and everyone motivates you out on the road. I don’t enter many races (not yet!) – last year I participated in the Spar Women’s Race, finishing in just over an hour. My most recent race was the Dis-Chem 5km Dash. This year my aim is to improve my time for the 5km Spar Women’s Race. To prepare I run hills whenever possible and train at least three times a week. As the slogan says, “Running is my cardio”…
When you’re not running?
Studying law at Unisa, work, exercise (I do pole dancing, aerial silks, yoga and acro!) and socialising with friends take up most of my time. I love cooking and baking, so I try to do that as often as possible … I’m all about making healthy sweets and treats … so far the raw peanut butter vegan blueberry bars and dairy-free ice cream have come out great! And, apparently, my mango ice cream is a real winner. Oh, and I can whip up a mean, delectable chocolate cake … nudge nudge!
Best-kept health secret?
Coconut oil – there’s nothing you can’t do with it – be it to cook with or in raw chocolate, as a hair mask, moisturiser or in a face mask. It’s amazing!
On weekends we’re most likely to find you?
Hanging out with friends, going to markets – the Horwoods Market and the Vegan Hippie Market are two of my favourites – trying new restaurants, doing yoga in the park on a Sunday or just reading.
Sports bras and pole-dancing shorts – I should seriously stop now … I have way too many.
Most adventurous thing you’ve done?
I went on a test flight in an ERJ 135 once – not sure if that counts as adventurous or dangerous …

Monique’s ultimate energy smoothie
15ml rolled oats (or normal oats if you prefer), 1 banana, some mixed berries, 15ml peanut butter, Nutritech Vegan protein powder, chia seeds and 250ml almond milk. Mix together and enjoy!
