In December 2008, the general mood on Wall Street was anything but festive. People were dealing with the tragic ripple effects of the financial crisis of 2007 -2008 (referred to as the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression in the 1930s) and the global economic downturn was hitting all levels of society.

Sadly, for thousands of unsuspecting investors, another crippling blow was about to be delivered as one of the worst Ponzi schemes in US history was about to be exposed.

There was ‘…no innocent explanation’ and as the facts and figures were slowly revealed, investigators soon discovered that the scheme had defrauded clients of billions of dollars. For some of these investors it was their life savings that were lost, and in that tragic moment their lives came crashing down.

While victims demanded to know exactly where their money had gone, the unforgiving media spotlight fell on the man behind the scheme – Bernard Madoff.

This is the focus of the compelling true-life drama, The Wizard of Lies.

Based on the best-selling book by Diana B Henriques, the film is directed by Barry Levinson (the talented filmmaker behind Bugsy and Sleepers) and stars the legendary Robert De Niro as Bernie Madoff and Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife, Ruth.

The Wizard of Lies chronicles Madoff’s fall from grace and how his wife and two sons, Mark (Alessandro Nivola) and Andrew (Nathan Darrow), were catapulted into the unmerciful public eye with tragic consequences.

This is a powerful film with stellar performances, especially from Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro, who, once again, proves why he is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most iconic actors of all time.

The Wizard of Lies is now available on DVD.
