Double the pleasure
We’re huge fans of Neil Ellis wines, and obviously have great taste, since the Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay 2015 and the Neil Ellis Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 recently took Gold Medals at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London, the latest in a long line of prominent awards and a nod of approval for his steadfast focus on sourcing superior grape varieties from low-yielding, hand-picked vineyard lots in the Cape’s best sites and turning them into outstanding wines.
The Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay 2015 is light golden green in colour with very youthful lime and melon aromatics, and gorgeous ripe citrus notes. With superbly integrated oak, it’s rich and full and is brilliant with everything from freshly shucked oysters (should you be lucky enough to have them) to butternut soup, from poached salmon with a hollandaise sauce to a sage butter chicken. For after dinner, served with a crème brûlée or a platter of soft cheeses. Around R225 a bottle.
The Neil Ellis Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is Neil Ellis Wines signature Cab Sauv. Matured in oak for 18 months, it’s smooth and plush and is sensational with a dish like matured rib-eye steak with bordelaise sauce, rosemary-braised lamb shanks, sticky barbeque ribs, or filet mignon with rich balsamic glaze. For a less formal, but no less enjoyable meal, try it with moussaka, a char-grilled burger with mushrooms and blue cheese, or vegetarian lasagne. R350 a bottle.
