Thrilling reads for the weekend

With the weather beyond awful, this weekend’s the perfect time to snuggle up with some great reads. Here are three of our top picks.

CJ Box has written an edge-of-the-seat tale of suspense and vengeance in Vicious Circle. After his daughter was beaten and dumped by the side of a country road, Joe Pickett, determined to avenge her, confronts the notorious Cates clan. As a result, three of them are dead and the two survivors land up behind bars. But Joe knows there will be a day of reckoning and now the youngest son, Dallas, is out of prison and back in town. All Joe can do is wait for Dallas to make the first move. Prepare to stay up all night with this one.

Susan Bayliss blew the whistle on her boss, a heart surgeon at a children’s hospital. She accused him of negligence, but at the enquiry, Susan was suspended as a troublemaker. In Rob McCarthy’s A Handful of Ashes, Susan is found dead – suspected suicide – but medical examiner Dr Harry Kent finds evidence of foul play.  The grieving parents of children who died demand answers, the hospital is stonewalling … it’s up to Dr Kent and DCI Frankie Noble to find out what was worth killing for.

Weird, strange, creepy even, but definitely riveting … Where She Went by BE Jones is all of those and more. TV journo Melanie Black wakes up one morning in bed with a man she doesn’t remember and realises no one can see or hear her. Does this mean she’s dead? And has she woken up next to her murderer? As she pieces together the last days of her life, Melanie begins to realise she has a choice to make … bring her killer to justice or wreak her own punishment on him.
